What is a Wire?

Dachshunds come in three coat types, Smooth, Long and Wire and they there are two size varieties, Standard weighing about 12 kg and Miniature with a maximum weight of 5 kg.

The breeds were originally developed to confront badgers underground and we have heard that they were also used to flush and retrieve small game and vermin from low cover.

They are sturdy, strong dogs with short legs.

Wires have had some Dandy Dinmont Terrier introduced to their breeding and the terrier influence makes them more outgoing and independent than other Dachshunds.

They have a thick double coat which needs stripping out with fingers, scissors and comb a couple of times a year and some tidying up before a show. The main colours are either brindle or red, a dark wheaten colour.

They are very loyal and loving and make excellent pets and companions.
